The Great Bowerbird (Clamydera nuchalis) inhabits the tropics. The males construct large bowers embellished with bleached shells, bones & white stones. When a female approaches he puts on a performance, posturing and whirring, raising his pink crest and offering a green berry to entice her through the bower to mate. She flies off to build the nest and rear young while the male mates with as many females as possible. The painting is inspired by sketches and photos of birds and their bowers at Lake Argyle and Broome Bird Observatory (WA).
